No more cattle to the slaughter in NTB

The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial administration has banned the slaughter of cows and heifers of reproductive age to boost the province’s cattle population.

As compensation, the administration has allocated Rp 10 billion (US$1.1 million) to buy cows brought by residents to abattoirs across the province.

“If anyone brings a cow to the slaughter house, we will urge the person not to slaughter it. If they need the money, the government will buy the cow and move it to a farming community,” the province’s livestock agency head Abdul Samad told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Samad said the ban, which has been in effect since June, aimed to support the Land of a Million Cattle program, which has been running since 2009.

The program set a target population of 1 million head of cattle across the province by 2013.

In 2008, the cattle population in the province stood at 546,000 head, 37 percent of which are breeding-age cows.
